Anita Flynn

I have completed an Advanced Diploma in Family Counselling and a Graduate Certificate in Chaplaincy. I enjoy spending time with my family, spending quiet time in the beautiful garden my husband grows for me, and walking my dog (preferably in the bush). I love learning and studying. I enjoy exercising, though it is very easy to talk myself out of it!

I have my own personal struggles with the effects of brain damage after a car accident a lifetime ago, but because of that, I have a very good understanding of the struggles we can face as humans and how walking and journeying together helps us manage and succeed in life, even if it takes time.

What sustains my whole being is the relationship I have with my Creator, God and Saviour. I will never impose my beliefs on you.

I grew up in Papua New Guinea, where all my primary schooling was through distance education. My friends and mentors at that time were native PNG people.

My family returned to Australia when I reached high school, which was quite a culture shock for me. When I completed high school, I chose to start an apprenticeship as a chef. After completing this, I went to the UK to further my experience and ability.

I met my future husband in the UK. He returned to Australia with me when my visa expired. We eventually moved to Melbourne as we were both chefs and felt Melbourne had more opportunities than Perth, where my family lives. After a holiday back to Perth, we drove back to Melbourne and had a severe car accident en-route. I suffered severe brain trauma in that accident, and my whole life as I knew it was taken away from me.

Recovery from my brain trauma was very difficult and took many years. I suffered significantly from grief and depression. I continue to suffer from the long-term consequences of brain damage.

I have a strong spirituality and believe it is only with the guidance of the Ultimate Being/Universe/God, whatever name you wish to use, that I have been supported through the accident, recovery, education, and work to do what I love to do now: walk with people in their own recovery and help others thrive, not just survive.
